The Best Essential Oils For Colds & Flu
Aromatherapy is a natural, powerful and effective way to use essential oils for colds and flu symptoms.
It’s that time of year again, and no I’m not just referring to that cold, blustery weather that makes up our Winter. Its Cold and flu season. Too many of us know that feeling – the chills, body aches and pain, fatigue, congestion and let’s not forget the coughing and sneezing or maybe worse the flu. Although it may seem unavoidable this time of year, here are some essential oils to not only help prevent the onset of these nasty symptoms but also to help relieve them once they are there. Now it should go without saying that essential oils should never be used to replace prescription medicine, but if you’re looking for a natural remedy, this is for you.
Essential oils are a great natural remedy for colds and cases of flu ( among many other things) and have a wide variety of ways to use them. One of the most common ways to help relieve cold and flu symptoms is to use a diffuser which disperses the oils evenly throughout your house through a vapour. Now, this isn’t the only way you can use essential oils for colds; many oils can be inhaled through a personal inhaler, added to your body wash, lotions and even applied to the bottom of your feet or chest.
5 OF OUR FAVOURITE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR COLDS AND FLU:
Eucalyptus oil is terrific for relieving chest congestion and stubborn coughs (if you’ve ever used Vicks, you’re probably quite familiar with the aroma already). However, while it does relieve stuffiness, this oil can be toxic if swallowed. That being said, the best way to enjoy the benefits of this essential oil is to inhale it when you are sick. Simply add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to your diffuser and breathe in as much of the vapour as you can. You can alternatively run a hot bath, adding in several drops to the water for the same effect.
2. Tea Tree
Tea tree essential oil is a germ-fighting powerhouse. Popular for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties, it can be inhaled to soothe sore throats and break up congestion. You can also use this oil to make a disinfectant spray, by mixing it with either vinegar or water. Just spray your high traffic areas like doorknobs, counters and sinks to kill those pesky germs.
Clove essential oil has a rich, spicy aroma that adds warmth to your home while diffused opening your airways and improving your breathing. While we recommend using it in a diffuser for those new to essential oils, many experienced users may choose to blend this oil with a carrier oil and massage it on the bottoms of their feet or chest for added cold relief. A word of caution though Clove oil can be an irritant so always perform a patch test before using in a lotion or even in your bath water.
Probably the most popular essential oil, Lavender has many uses when it comes to aromatherapy. While sweet and refreshing this oil can be used to help break up phlegm, relieve sore muscles and encourage a good night sleep—one of the best remedies when you’re fighting a cold or the flu.
This may seem like a no brainer when it comes to relieving cold symptoms, but peppermint essential oil is a must-have during cold and flu season. Known for its cool, refreshing aroma, it is ideal for helping you through those nasty coughing jags or soothes the nastiest sore throat. Peppermint Oil contains menthol which makes it indispensable for clearing those airways and relieving your tired, aching muscles.
